Waiver

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Annual Open Enrollment and waiver period: 07/15/2024 - 08/15/2024

During this period, all MIT SHIP members can make changes to their insurance, including adding family members. If you are student who wants to opt out of MIT SHIP coverage, you must submit a waiver during this period.

Seasonal waiver periods for incoming students only:

Spring: 12/15/2024 - 01/15/2025

Summer: 05/15/2025 - 06/15/2025

During this period, all MIT SHIP members can make changes to their insurance, including adding family members. If you are student who wants to opt out of MIT SHIP coverage, you must submit a waiver during this period. In order to be eligible for a waiver, your alternate plan must meet the requirements below:

  1. Plan must be ACA-Compliant Plan must include the Minimum Essential Health benefits.
  2. Must provide coverage in the Massachusetts area.
  3. Must comply with 956 CMR 8.05

 
   Waiver Minimum Essential Health Benefits:

  1. Ambulatory patient services
  2. Emergency services
  3. Hospitalization (such as surgery)
  4. Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (care for a mother and baby before and after the baby is born)
  5. Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment, counseling, and psychotherapy
  6. Prescription drugs
  7. Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
  8. Laboratory services
  9. Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
